Ordering Mixing & Mastering with Reference Songs
When you order mixing and mastering services for your music after recording, here are some useful suggestions to ensure a smooth process and help your engineer clearly understand your vision, ultimately achieving the best result for your song.
Choosing Reference Songs
When you share reference songs/artists with your mixing and mastering engineer, the references should reflect the sound and vibe you're aiming for in your song. Avoid sharing your favorite songs or artists that do not share similarities with your track. Instead, select reference songs that are in the same genre and have a similar vibe, structure, and arrangement to your own.
For example, if your song is hip-hop and you provide an EDM track as a reference, the sound you’re looking for may not be conveyed accurately because the two genres have very different elements. Similarly, if your song features full-band instrumentation, it’s not advisable to use a simple piano and vocal arrangement as a reference, even if both songs are in the same genre, because the mixing and treatment for these would be very different.
Cover Songs
If you’re working on a cover song, please provide the original version as a reference, especially if you want your cover to closely resemble it. Alternatively, if there are other cover versions you’d like the engineer to reference, feel free to share those.
Communicating Your Vision
If you have a clear idea of the sound you're looking for but struggle to find the right terms to describe it, providing reference material that shares similarities with your song can help convey your vision. This will allow the engineer to better understand what you're aiming for. If you're unsure or don't have specific requests, you can leave it to the engineer to bring their expertise to the project.
